poker players are repeatedly told that one must play aggressively to win. It sounds good in theory, but in the real-world of poker rooms and online sites, it is scary to bet out big and often and put real money at risk. How do you know if you are being aggressive enough and how can you cultivate a more aggressive poker style? The measure of your aggressive is determined by how many folds you force at the table. The ultimate benchmark of aggressiveness if how many pots you win with no showdown at all. To adopt a more aggressive poker online style, you will need to practice it. Find a safe place to do so where you won’t lose a lot of money - at free online sites, or low-priced fixed entry tournaments. Then challenge yourself to win as many hands as you can with no showdown. At loose tables, bet aggressively when you have premium cards. At tight tables, be the maniac. Work to establish a defined image from the start so you can pull off some bluffs that don’t go to showdown. Keep track of your results, and note how many hands you played and how many go to the river, and then to actual showdown. See if you can increase the percentage of pots won without showing your cards. This is a good way to build confidence in a more aggressive style. Make it a goal to win pots without showdown.

If I had to pick a suited connector out of the range of available poker possibilities that I most enjoy playing, it might be the 4 5. Four five suited is the lowest possible combination of two cards that can flop a straight as the bottom end of the straight and the top end, as well as the range of joints that you can spin from the two of them.
They also are nice in that you can flop a pair with them (fours or fives) and still be able to get away easier in trapped spots, whereas flopping pairs of, say, nines or tens might be harder to lay down when you make top pair and are still beat. This is one of the ways that suited connectors can cause trouble for poker players that don’t know how to lay down in the right spot, and the 4 5 makes it easier to do so.
Among the nicknames available to the poker four five, one of the funniest that I’ve come across is Mike Myers, named after his starring role in the movie 54. I wouldn’t necessarily want to be heard quoting that I play Mike Myers when I turn over that combo as the winning handsome things you should keep to yourself.
California vs. Nevada Rakes: Which Is Better for You?
California and Nevada may share a state border, but they have very different approaches to taking the rakes. The states are close enough together where a traveler can hop across the border to find the rake collection system they like, so pay attention so you know where to go. California collects poker rakes based on a time drop system. This means that the house takes a set amount after a certain amount of time has elapsed. This can be useful because you don’t see it as part of each online poker hand you play. However, slow players end up paying much more to the casino than fast players. This isn’t really fair to thecasino players that like to take their time over their cards. The other option is the hand based system in Nevada. Under Nevada rules the casino gets a proportion of each individual hand played. The repeatedly take small bits from your stack to form a big chunk of change in the end. Fast players in this system actually end up giving the casino more than they would in sunny California. The difference in rake collection may seem like a trivial detail at first, but trust me those percentages add up. You need to find the system that works for you so that you don’t end up giving the casino more than its fair share.
Last week we reported on the ongoing ego battle of Joan Rivers towards Annie Duke (professional poker player) on the Celebrity Apprentice, a popular television show with more twists and turns than a water slide and the everpresent lingering words “You’re Fired” hovering in the back of the minds of the contestants. Well things have heated up again between the two celebrities, this time with Rivers upping the ante on the poker star comparing her to Benito Mussolini and Adoph Hitler. Worse yet, Rivers, in a fit of rage, fell victim to stereotyping calling all poker players “trash.” Commenting on the whole escapade, Annie Duke likened the show to a game of online poker. “Playing cards is all about game theory, managing your opponents, and trying to figure out logical strategies to counteract. There are [always] ways to manipulate your competitors.” To cap off the cake, icing so to speak, as it turns out Melissa Rivers was recently “fired” from the show which caused her mother Joan (both were contestants) to go into a furious rage, insulting each and everyone on her way out and claiming to quit the show. A few of the words that could still be heard spewing from River’s mouth despite the censorship were “pit vipers” and “whore.” And with a simple “F*ck you, goodbye” Rivers was gone. But out beloved Duke is still in the game.
Hog Roasting has returned. There is no better way of catering for vast amounts of people, then by roasting a whole hog, not only do you get the excitement of watching a hog cook slowly, but you also get a richer flavor as your quiet literally eating the whole hog. The technique of spit roasting has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, and have always been liked for the level of taste and for the grandness and spectacle it brings to usually dull catering events. The spit roasting technique itself is not only functional for roasting hogs, any large cut or piece of meat can very easily be turned into a spit roast, animals such as lambs and chickens as most animals are delicious when cooked this way. The openness of the cooking allows for basting when required or as often as you like. The history books are full grand meals thrown by the wealthy and important all based around the focus piece of a beautifully roasted hog, this ancient way of cooking is once again coming to the for front of cooking with more and more celebrity chefs trying their hand at spit roasting animals. Recently Hesston Blumenthal spit roasted a hog in a Tudor style which is very much similar to the modern day way except the rotation is no longer done manually.
A popular old saying in the world of poker strategy is that when a player makes a fourth raise before the flop, it means he has aces. The logic here is that any casino player, when facing a third raise preflop, would only reraise if he had the absolute best hand in poker, wanting to see the flop before he continues on with the hand. Even huge hands like QQ KK could be seen as just calling for the third bet, as seeing an overcard on the flop would kill their action.
While this rule can often be true, it seems that in the hyper-aggressive world that is the current state of online poker, it’s not impossible for a player to continue reraising with those slightly smaller large pairs, or even with a bluff. With so many players going more and more for the throat with hands, many players might try to represent aces, or continue to push their opponents off of their hands by using aggression even where in the past other players would have slowed down. The wisdom still to be taken from this rule, though, is that putting in too much before the flop is often a reckless or gambling prospectthough other players may make it their habit to reraise with JJ or QQ, the main definition of a poker hand occurs postflop.
Side pots in poker games can get complicated. When all-in caller can’t match a bet, the dealer subtracts the all-in bet from the larger bets, and creates a side pot. When a bet of 1,000 is called by a player with only 700 chips, and another player then calls and matches the 1,000 bet, a side pot is established for the poker players with chips remaining.
The side pot contains 600 chips and can continue to grow if the poker players with remaining chips continue to bet. The all-in player can only win the main pot because it represents the most that player could bet. An “all-in for less” player is not entitled to win any more chips. If the all-in player wins the hand, then the main pot of 2,100 goes to the all-in player. Those 2,100 chips represent the all-in bet of 700 matched by two other players.
The two other players are also contending for the side pot, and whichever of their two hands is best wins the side pot, which was 600 when first set aside, and can grow bigger from subsequent betting from the two remaining players.
If one of the two players with chips has the best hand of all three, then that player wins both the main and the side pots. The all-in player is out of chips, and must leave the tournament or buy more chips to continue in a cash game.
Online poker is the most visible and easily accessible form of poker; anyone with an internet connection is constantly exposed to advertisements for online casinos and encouraged to try them out. With the constant bombardment of internet poker sites, many people ask, who exactly plays online poker? Actually, online poker is becoming increasing popular across all different demographic groups. People of all incomes and experiences try their hand at online poker, some more successfully than others.
One of the largest groups of online poker players are casino players. These players are used to playing poker in a casino setting, but will often supplement their income by practicing online. This demographic constitutes about 37% of the online poker players online at any one time. They are joined by individuals who make their whole income off of internet poker, those you play casually or infrequently, and those who are trying out online poker for the first time.
The demographics of online poker has a few very striking effects. First of all, for the newbies out there, it means that you will be facing a lot of people who really know the game. One way to avoid a ruthless schooling is to stick to the low limit tables when you are just starting out, as professional players tend to play at higher stakes. For the more advanced players, you can be sure of meeting players with a roughly equivalent skill level. Adjust your play accordingly.
How many times at a poker game have you gotten pocket Aces only to draw dead and lose to some clown who drew two pair. I’ve lost with pocket Aces more often than I’ve won with them, and that’s because for the longest time, I had no clue how to play them.
My problem was that with pocket Aces, I wanted as many people in the poker hand as I could get. The problem that line of thinking is hat it’s only the best hand pre-flop. After the flop, anything better than a pair can beat you unless you get another Ace on the flop.
With pocket Aces, you’ve got way better poker odds if you’re playing against just one or two opponents. If you’ve got a large pocket pair, it’s time to make a power play. A power Play is a large bet, raise or re-raise designed to get people to fold out of the pot, so if you’re at a table where the big blind is $20, raise it to $160, and get all the marginal hands out of the way. Once the flop comes, keep betting large and make your opponent pay to get the next card. By the time the river comes, if you’re sure you’ve still got the upper hand (so to speak), raise just enough to keep them in, maybe double the big blind. Then rake in all your cash.
